Banking the cord blood of your child for future
Cord blood is the blood left over in the umbilical cord and placenta after the birth of a baby. This blood has been found to be an extremely rich source of stem cells. These stem cells can now be used as an alternative to embryonic, bone marrow and other stem cell types. Both private and public cord blood banks have developed since the mid to late 1990s in response to the potential for cord blood transplants in treating diseases of the blood and immune systems.

Cord Blood BankingCollection of the cord blood takes place shortly after birth in both vaginal and cesarean (c-section) deliveries. It's done using a specific kit that parents must order ahead of time from their chosen cord-blood bank. After a vaginal delivery, the umbilical cord is clamped on both sides and cut. The cord blood collection process is simple, safe, and painless. It is usually completed in less than five minutes by your health care provider. Cord blood collection does not interfere with delivery and is possible with vaginal or cesarean deliveries

There are two methods for the cord blood collection:
  1. Syringe method: In this a syringe is used to draw blood from the umbilical cord has been cut. The process is basically the same as drawing blood for a blood test.
  2. Bag method: The umbilical cord is elevated to cause the blood to drain into a bag.

Cord blood stem cells are currently used in the treatment of over 40 life-threatening diseases, and play an important role in the treatment of blood and immune system related genetic diseases, cancers, and blood disorders. Umbilical cord blood stem cells can be used in transplants to treat a variety of pediatric disorders including leukemia, sickle cell disease, Hodgkin's lymphoma, metabolic disorders etc.
